1.5°C for Victory

Students and faculty met during COP24 to discuss over tea & biscuits how to make 1.5°C warming limit possible

first event took place on 12.03.2018 (1st day of cOp24) at the new school!

What this campaign was about?

On December 3rd delegations from all over the world will convene in Katowice, Poland for the 24th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, aka COP24. Their goal will be to reach an agreement on the roadmap for implementing the Paris Agreement. So far, so good.

Here’s the problem: This is not only a difficult task given the need to reach a consensus among 190 countries, but even if this consensus will be reached the commitments made under the Paris Agreement are not sufficient to meet the target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. Don’t take our word for it - both the U.N. and the latest IPCC report agree that this is the case. In other words, whatever the outcome of the COP24 is, it is just not going to be good enough.

So what can we do about it? We have two options: The first is to hope the participants in COP24 know what they’re doing and hope for the best. The second is to look for new strategies to fight climate change effectively. We go with the second option because we believe that the first one is a recipe for failure.

COP24 is an opportunity to start a serious conversation about how we make a 1.5°C limit possible. While we acknowledge the importance of the discussions at COP24, we also want to have conversations with young people who are not afraid to ask critical questions, are not bounded by political and economic constraints, and are also willing to take bold action. This is why we’re inviting students and faculty worldwide to join the "1.5°C for Victory Campaign" for a joint exploration of ways to make 1.5°C limit possible.

When did we do it?

The 1.5°C for Victory campaign will take place along COP24 between Monday, December 3rd to Friday, December 14th.

What did we do?

We meet, discuss and take action! Students and faculty will meet during the COP24 to discuss over tea and biscuits what actually prevents us from achieving the limit of 1.5°C, offer ideas on how to overcome these barriers and design experiments they will be conducting to test their assumptions.

The structure of the meetings is influenced by Ertel & Solomon’s strategic conversations framework and is grounded in our understanding of climate change as an adaptive challenge situated in a complex context.

WHAT’S NEXT?

These meetings are just the first step. We believe that the insights generated in these meetings and the experiments following them will help identify strategies that can help move the needle and ways to scale them quickly. These insights will also shape the next steps of the campaign!
